I think Andrew Neil made it pretty clear why there it is so problematical to get the law changed, although I would have liked to have heard Dominic Grieve explaining in more detail why it is so difficult. The point about a Bill of Responsibilities which most people want, I imagine, is that it would/could end up being over-ruled by the HR legislation. What I do wonder is whether it would contravene HR if criminals lost their rights to full Leave to Remain or indeed whether their British nationality (if originally an immigrant) could be changed back for ILR. The point being that those on leave to remain stand a higher risk of being removed if they commit a criminal offence. OK this will not address the whole problem, but it would be start in the right direction. It would interesting to know how many of the 47 members of the Convention are opposed to change and why. |
