I didn't write the headline, Andy. You can see chapter and verse on the NUT's bullying of the Acton headteacher here: http://www.spectator.co.uk/essays/6228693/revealed-the-secret-war-over-englands-schools.thtml I'm afraid LBHF's share of the £50m Harnessing Technology grant would be lost whether or not the WLFS is established in LBHF. Therefore, the WLFS cannot be accused of diverting money from LBHF's schools. More generally, less than half the children of secondary school age in LBHF are educated at state secondary schools within the borough so there's no question we need some more secondary schools in the area – a need that will only grow more acute as the population boom makes itself felt in the secondary sector. Allowing a group of parents and teachers to set up a school in a former school building is a far more cost effective way of delivering those much needed places than if the Council stuck up a new build. The Mail may be supportive of free schools, but the trade unions have the Daily Mirror on their side and have no hesitation in using it to disseminate lies about free schools. See my recent Comment is Free piece in the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jan/19/free-schools-social-cohesion If trade unions are prepared to use their huge resources and media connections to spread misinformation about the proposers of free schools in an attempt to discredit us, you can hardly blame us for fighting back. I would much prefer to be working with the teaching unions on this project, but they have made it abundantly clear that they're not interested in cooperating with free school proposers. |
