The interesting thing about the debate on this school is how polarised it has become. It does perplex me slightly that two new schools are being set up in an area which I wasn't aware had issues with capacity and this can only be a waste of precious resources, yet the vitreol the West London Free School seems to have attracted seems totally out of proportion. It is also counter-productive as much of it seems to be misinformation which has been meat and drink to a polemicist like Toby Young and provided him with easy targets to help make his case. The hostility doesn't seem to be coming from local parents who are either indifferent or potentially interested and talking to teachers they generally are quite happy to see schools opening in the area as it gives them more local job options. The main opponents appear to be the educational bureaucracy and the unions that represent them. It does make me wonder if the untold story of the free school movement is that it is a trojan horse to dramatically reduce the extra overhead for education that is provided by the LEA. |
