Samantha, This thread began with an enquiry whether Fiona Millar was right to call AHS a 'good' school. I've looked carefully and I can't find any criticism of individual teachers or pupils but some criticism of its published results over the years as well as some queries about the oppportunities for more able children. AHS results do not denote a 'good' school' for many of us, even if OFSTED has changed its definition since the days of the combative Chris Woodhead. AHS could make itself more attractive to parents like Toby Young, but chooses otherwise. Over thirty years, parents have become religious, raided their pension fund for independent school fees, moved house or............now most interestingly try to set up another school where they feel their children will do well. Toby Young isn't alone and he is up agsainst an entrenched culture which sees him as a threat. But if Fiona Millar can unblushingly encourage her children to aim for Oxford then. so can Toby and friends seek a school which might offer a different kind of education from that delivered by AHS. With any luck OFSTED will also consider it a 'good school'. |
