I thought Fiona Millar brought up some strong points and was not at all patronising. Toby did not seem to very confident in his defence of her counter arguments, mainly where is the money going to come from and where will the Free School experiment end if every self interested minority group has their way. Acton High School has been rebuilt at the cost of quite a few million quid, which we will all have to pay through the nose for because it was funded via PFI. If we are all paying such a high price, why not simply improve the good school that we already have instead of going off on a tangent with an untested experiment(Toby mentioned Sweden but Fiona countered that it was wrong to draw comparisons). BTW I think might have offened quite a few on here by describing "Poets Corner" as being on the wrong side of the tracks 25 years ago. The residents of Perryn Road have such lofty views of themselves. I admire Toby for wanting better for the local kids and especially his disquiet about the lack of social mobility that they now face, but I do think that his efforts would have far greater impact if he could attempt to get involved with AHS. |
