The irony is that Fiona Millar, through her own hard work and dedication, managed to insert her children into and then help create precisely the kind of school Toby Young wants to create for Acton. And fair play to her. Having had the benefit of an extremely good, state funded education in Camden for her own children (have a look at the William Ellis website), she now has agenda against what she called "sharp-elbowed middle class parents getting into some of the better state schools". Am I alone in thinking that is more than a little ripe? Acton High School may well be such a school -and we all hope it will be- it is already extremely well equipped, well funded and has fantastic staff. However with demographic change a fact (not a theory, not something that might happen, something that will happen) we are to be critically undersupplied with secondary places. In that context I can't understand why anyone would seek to deny a group of people, with the drive enthusiasm, ability and sheer appetite to set up an alternative school. If Acton High carries on the way it is going (and there's no reason to suggest it shouldn't) then hopefully it will thrive in a more collaborative and competitive environment. You can't have too many good schools, another quality offering in Acton has to be a good thing. |
