I thought Toby was dreadful - over confident and patronising when trying to be "street" but fumbling in the studio when confronted by the combination of Emily Maitlis and Fiona Millar. I thought Fiona Millar was very eloquent, knowledgeable and had obviously done her homework, unlike Toby. I was very interested in his idea initially, and even went to his first meeting. However, I was left with a nasty taste in my mouth as it seemed that all the middle class parents there were really trying to set up a nice middle class school for "their" children, rather than being motivated to set up a truly comprehensive school which would be open to all. No philanthropy or altruism there. The Newsnight film only reinforced that suspicion. My son is in year 11 at Acton High and I have to say that the school seems to have upped its game quite dramatically over the past months. I would gladly put my £50 bung from the council on a bet that most of Toby's cohorts will be sending their children to Latymer. Cynical moi? |
