| Missed this during its short London release in late 2013 but now out on DVD and can see why people either love or hate it. Italian movie from the team (director Paolo Sorrentino and actor Toni Servillo) that bought you many other recent great films including "Il Divo" the fictionalised film on Giulio Andreotti which was nominated for an Oscar. At 2 hours 15 minutes you will I suspect either find the movie to be a feast for your eyes (amazing visuals throughout and up to end of credits) and ears (a razor sharp script of one liners and acidic exchanges) or over indulgent and too long. Recalls the Fellini movie La Dolce Vita with a story about a 65 year old critic and swinger facing up belatedly to the vacuous lifestyle he has led (his reputation rests on one famous novel written 20 years before and since then has lived off writing cynical magazine reviews) with many great portrayals of the characters inhabiting a life of endless partying amongst pretentious Rome high society and Vatican (in the last part of the movie). If you know Rome slightly from holidays I suspect you will get swept away by what is at heart one long love story to Rome and its architecture. |
