| With closure of the London Film Festival a few personal thoughts: 1. Many of the more popular or critics favourites were very disappointing (including "The Duke of Burgundy" (the packed out cinema was suffering walkouts from halfway through); "The Salvation" A Danish cowboy filmed in South Africa with Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green filmed in the Sergio Leone style, lacked the dark humour to make it work beyond the set violence pieces; and, "Son of a gun" an Australian Guy Ritchie style gangster movie showed lead Ewan McGregor cannot "do villains". 2. Personal surprise was seeing three low budget UK films that were all great - "Catch me daddy" (Pakistani family revenge killings in Yorkshire with great female lead); "Electricity" about a girl with epilepsy seeking her lost brother (another great female lead); and "Snow in paradise" an East End gangster movie where the teenage villain converts to Islam after his Pakistani friend is killed by his uncle's gang (partly based on the co-writer and lead actor's own personal life story). 3. Best two films for me of the 16 I saw was a Basque movie "Loreak", about three women's separate lives slowly affecting each other and "Tender" a documentary about an attempt to set up a community burial service in an Australian steel town. The variety and quality of such lower budget films versus the typical mainstream bigger budget movies on offer sadly seems to reflect the normal weekly fare on offer at the local Odeon each week! |
