This is a monster of a film: two and a half hours long and - as mu cameramen used to say on shoots of which they were particularly proud "every frame a Rembrandt" or in this case, ovvie, a Turner.

It is lavish and lush and beautifully acted and you do get used to the archaic dialogue and even the langour, quite quickly. But it's not packed with incident.

Tinothy Spall is amazing - and his grunts are a work of art. The two women in his life are also great. But its the attention to period detail and the sheer look of it that is really spell-binding.

Plus I'm nearly sure there was a role for Strand-on-the-green. But no location credits so its hard to be certain.
