| I have now worked out this year's theme! One always emerges whether it's death or cloning or disability. This year it is the lives of great men (and one woman) mostly British and mostly eccentric: Turner, Turing, Hawking & Brittain to start with. And they are a good bunch too. The Theory of Everything may be the best yet. It tracks Stephen Hawking from active young man to caged brain, through the romance with his first wife. Good script but amazing for the performances. Eddie Redmayne is just stunning in the most physically difficult acting part ever. And Felicity Jones as Jane is stunning too. Apparently (Eddie Redmayne said at the Q & A last night) when they showed it to the great man, he liked it so much that he allowed them to use "his" voice - the virtual one so identified with hi, It's copyright so they had dubbed using another one. They were SO chuffed about this! Really interesting tale of a relationship's trajectory under impossible pressure. Wholly without blame but a real feeling for the pressures everyone concerned felt. It was really moving - especially when you consider that he was given two years to live on diagnosis at 21 and is now 72 and no-one knows why. If the science baffles you, wait for the pea and potato scene! |
