| When I go and watch football - which my family like me to do every now and again just to show an interest - or more likely because they can't get rid of the third ticket - I really don't enjoy it. Indeed I try to ensure I only go once a year. This is because I find it enormously tedious and, at the same time, extraordinarily stressful. My reaction to this flick was exactly the same: tedium punctuated by stress at the bloody bits - of which there are rather a lot. An hour in and I was willing it to end ASAP (a no score draw would have been fine.) But no, it's 109 minutes of turgid tosh. A shame since it is beautifully shot in the pretty Czech Republic which doubles for the smoky mountains in some American state beginning with C, but not Colorado. Also it has a starry cast who do their best: I love Toby Jones and Rhys Ifans - both of whom are great with some deeply unpromising material, but I suppose the big names are Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence - so fab in Silver Linings Playbook. But the slaughter, the flying axes, the panther hunting, the traumatic past and idiotic present just topple the whole thing over into mush. You could amuse yourself with counting the corpses, but I am not sure what else to recommend to pass the time. Another morning I will never get back. Should have made scones instead. |
