| If you are looking for an uplifting or happy film then this will definitely not be the one. Three days in 1915 in the life of the lady of the film title who was Rodin the sculptor's mistress and post their break up became a recluse and was incarcerated by her family in a mental asylum run by nuns. The film over its ninety minutes is beautifully filmed almost entirely in the asylum and its surroundings in Provence, with many of the actors being real inmates of such institutions. This adds to the incredible nuanced lead performance by Juliette Binoche as the tortured artist, whose Catholic family especially her brother (who is shown as the one whose mental state is crazy) want her to remain in the asylum. The type of film that European cinema (especially the French) do so well and very thought provoking on the themes of sanity and religion. |
