As a result of 37 written questions to the Council, some picture of the debacle last month is emerging. Refuse collection In April, there were 8,094 missed collection reports for refuse and recycling. The previous April there were 900 missed collection reports. Street cleaning Streets inspected for litter picking are graded A (no litter), B (the odd bit of litter), C (quite a lot of litter) or D (a lot of litter) by the street monitoring team after street cleaning should be completed. Here are the stats for April, with figures for April last year in brackets: Grade A: 2,960 – 67% (12,750 – 94% ) Grade B: 790 – 18% (444 – 3%) Grade C: 681 – 15% (313 – 2%) Grade D 7 – 0.2% (0 – 0%) Totals 4,438 (13,507) Noticeably fewer inspections, in part because the street monitoring team has been cut from 7 to 5. It's not surprising streets look dirtier when performance has fallen from such a high level. Fly tips in April were 344 (277 a year ago). Difficult to say why but there are fewer envirocrime officers (13, down from 23) and April was the first month where there was no free garden collection service. Recycling 1062 tonnes were processed via the Ideal MRF in Kent in April 2012. Dry recycling kerbside tonnages average at about 1200 tonnes a month. So in April almost 90% of this was chucked in the back of a lorry and driven to Kent for sorting. That means resident’s efforts to improve recycling by sorting at kerbside have been largely for nought.
