Richard. Yes, you are right. This property was a laundry for many years. I have researched as much history as i can online related to this property but as yet haven't gone too deep......... There were privately owned baths at no. 91 Shakespeare Road in 1886. Water came from an artesian well beneath the building. The remains/evidence of which are still visible today. 1889-1890 Acton baths :Owned by Mr Henry Scotting... 1893-4 Owned by Mr Henry Scotting....Laundry 1907...James Woodman......Furniture depository 1907...Mrs Woodman........Laundry 1911.....As above. Here is some more history the dates of which i am unsure of.........In no particular order.... During WW2 it was used as a NAFFI for soldiers. The basement of the house was used as a 'poultry club'. The side/rear of the house was a fruit & veg market. At some stage it was used for stabling horses. A workshop for making wooden display signs. A snooker club. There is a lot more history but i would have to talk to a local resident who was born in the 1920's and has lived opposite 89-91 all his life. He would know more. The house was left in 'trust' to the current owners.....A conveyance dated 10th October 1877 made between (1) The British Land Company Limited and (2) The Era Investment and Advance Company Limited contains restrictive covenants. A beautiful house.......A sad loss........ |
