The building - I read on this forum - is actually the site of a very early 19th century swimming pool - and there are still architectural traces of it on the premises. My guess is it is a building of historical importance - even if not listed. It pre-dates Acton Baths - which is itself historically important. Looking at it- with large windows to ensure plenty of daylight - could it also have been the site of a laundry? If so - its another bit of Soapsud Island's legacy about to be consigned to rubble. The only surviving laundry building in Acton I know of is the large building on the corner of Grove Place. The last other obvious one - Sussex Laundries on Acton Lane was demolished for housing - three or four years ago. Whatever the facts - it clearly is a building in keeping with the style and period of the rest of Shakespeare Road - and in my view the most interesting, grandest building in the whole street. So why would you want to demolish that? |
