| This is a film by an Italian director though the main language is French. Not French as you learned it at school, but French as she is spoken in large parts of Africa. It actually took me a while to realise that it was French that they were speaking and not a tribal language. Seydou is a 16-year-old Senegalese, living with his widowed mother and numerous kid sisters in what seems to be a happy life. He is still in school. But he and his cousin Moussa are determined to head for a better life in Europe and do odd jobs after school to save up. The first trafficker they approach won't taken them, telling them 'Europe is not what you think it is. It's not how it looks on TV', but they won't be put off and are soon on their way by bus to Mali, where they pick up fake passports, then into Niger, where they have to bribe the border guards, then on the dangerous trek across the Sahara, some of it by car but much on foot; it's littered with the bodies of the fallen. I found it very gripping but it's harrowing in parts. That said, it's also oddly sanitised as some people are unexpectedly kind and helpful. It ends slightly frustratingly, in that I was muttering 'Okay, but what happens next'?! Well worth seeing, though, and on at Act One. |
