| We're in provincial France in the late 19th century. Eugenie is the cook at Dodin's manor house and she is fabulous at it. He's been in love with her for ages and would like to marry her but she thinks they're fine as they are. Only Eugenie starts to have fainting fits. She insists there's nothing wrong and refuses to see a doctor but she does agree to marry him and they announce their engagement to all their friends at a glorious open-air lunch. I had reservations about this film as it's well over 2 hours long and has very little plot but I needn't have worried. Long periods go by in which we watch people preparing, cooking, serving and eating with barely a word spoken and it's endlessly fascinating. Huge amounts of food are prepared and you wonder why everyone doesn't weigh 25 stone. I did enjoy the subtitle about 'peasant pie' but am glad to report that the chef definitely said pheasant! |
