| A film so set in the early ‘70s that the opening screen has the old British censor’s certificate and historic film crackling sounds! I have not seen any of the director’s prior films (including “Sideways” from 2004 with Paul Giamatti, who stars in this) but this film is a great start to 2024 as Susan states. The film poster’s strap line “They’re all alone in this together”, captures the story perfectly of three ill suited individuals trapped to spend a Xmas together and despite their initial dislikes slowly helping each other out. Paul Giamatti as the cranky teacher with his continual acerbic comments dominates but the grieving cook (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and the problem student (Dominic Sessa in a first-time acting role) provide equally amazing performances. Not too difficult to see why the film is garnering so many plaudits and award nominations (including Oscars)! |
