| Most of us rebel against our parents in our youth; not many of us run off and join the IRA, as posh girl Rose Dugdale did in the early 70s, via a Marxist training camp in Cuba. She died last week and her obituary in the Times said that the IRA initially assumed that she was a British agent before realising that the security services would have come up with someone less implausible than this former débutante. Rose masterminded the theft of 19 Old Masters from a country house in Wicklow where the owners had clearly never heard of security. The haul included a Vermeer and was to be held to ransom for the release of a number of IRA prisoners, including the Price sisters. The thing that struck me most about this film is how disappointingly unsubtle it is, even clunky, though you spend most of the running time looking at Rose and thinking 'Silly Little Girl'. There are also tiresome but luckily brief scenes where we enter Rose's imagination which usually involves her dreaming of shooting someone dead. Baltimore is a village in Ireland, in case you were wondering. In the film, the IRA have a safe house there. |
