| The last time I saw a film which was all about food was in the late 1980s, being a Danish film "Babette's Feast", which similarly went into great lengths on the preparation of food and involved a French female chef. The key difference is that earlier film had an underlying plot that drove the story line and action on screen. As Susan states, this film is very different being wholly about the cooking of (done in much greater detail with more roaming camera close ups than any TV cooking programmes) and the personal enjoyment of food and wines. In many ways, this is a film you feel only the French could make (though the director/writer is Vietnamese), with its numerous philosophical observations on food and wine tastes and the art of cooking, though dialogue is sparse across the two plus hours. I found it too long and ponderous saved largely by the amazing acting, especially the always excellent Juliette Binoche as the cook whose physical nuances underpin the separate relationship she enjoys with Dodin (Benoit Magamel), the creator of the food recipes cooked and the chateau where they live. P.S. Definitely not a film for vegetarians! |
