It's really looking like a golden year for film. Hirayama is a middle-aged man living in Tokyo where he works cleaning public lavatories. He takes great pride in his work, unlike his whiny, slapdash young colleague Takashi. Hirayama lives alone in his tiny house, reading and tending his bonsai. He listens to cassette tapes in his car. In his lunch break he photographs trees on an old-style camera with film in it. He seems to have no family or friends although he is greeted cordially at the bathhouse he frequents and the bars where he eats his evening meal. Is he lonely? It's actually hard to tell. It's a gentle, leisurely film with a central character who barely speaks but it's somehow a hymn to decency and kindliness. And cleanliness. In Japanese by Wim Wenders On general release and coming to Act One from Friday.
