The Moon landing was such an historic event and, of course, a great propaganda coup for the U.S.A. at the height of the cold war so my view of it has always been coloured by those facts.  I have never given much thought to what might have been going on in the lives and emotions of those directly involved.  And given the nature of most American cinematic blockbusters I was half expecting some sort of propaganda-fest.  I couldn't have been more wrong.

First Man is a close-up examination of Neil Armstrong, his immediate family and his colleagues.  We learn about how he was selected to lead the lunar mission, the training that ensued and the actual voyage.  I hadn't realised how many astronauts were killed in the course of testing equipment.  Quite shocking.  Also shocking is how primitive the equipment looks compared to today's technology.  (I actually visited NASA a couple of years back and was told on the tour that the total computational power within the control room was much less than we each now have on our smart phones!)  How on earth did they get to the moon with that?

Anyway, First Man is terrific.  The direction by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, LaLa Land) is impressive.  The acting, particularly Ryan Gosling and Clare Foy (Mr and Mrs Armstrong) was very convincing.  And I think the music and sound should qualify for a gong nomination or two. 

All in all a wonderful emotional roller coaster.  See it!
