| I very much agree with Joe's analysis of this magnificent film. Unsurprisingly it is extremely critical of how cults can divide families and yet it manages to convey this message with great subtlety. The Witnesses were never depicted as monsters but as believable, if deluded, human beings. There is a courtship in the early part of the film which, though awkward, comes across as quite sweet. A lesser writer might have adopted a more sledgehammer approach, but this softer portrayal is much more effective. The last few seconds are quite devastating and made me long for a sequel! |
