I think The Babadook was the last horror film that I saw that was anywhere near as scary and enjoyable as this one.  Ghost Stories started out as a stage show, which unfortunately I missed, but the transfer to celluloid certainly works.  It has an excellent cast including Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther and Andy Nyman, who also co-produced and co-directed.  Nyman has also produced several of Derren Brown's stage shows and his obvious skill at creating illusion are put to good use here.

A clever feature of this film is that the central character, played by Nyman, is a professional skeptic who publically debunks and shames fake mediums, so this subtly draws in smart people like us who don't believe in the supernatural!  The acting is uniformly excellent.  Paul Whitehouse's terror is especially infectious - certainly no laughing matter!  And the soundtrack will have you jumping ...

It's hard to say more without getting into spoiler realm, but if you feel like a break from our lovely Spring weather, get into the darkness at Vue, Westfield, where Ghost Stories will still be showing next week.
