12-year-old Alexei lives with his parents in a flat outside a big city. They are splitting up and already have their new partners lined up. Neither cares for the boy at all: Mum resents having married because she was pregnant and wishes she'd had an abortion; Dad is more interested in the baby his girlfriend is expecting. They row one night over custody of Alex, neither wanting him, not realising that he is listening.

It takes them two days to notice that he's gone missing. The police aren't interested but there is a volunteer organisation which specialises in missing people, suggesting that this happens a lot.

It paints a bleak picture of contemporary Russia, where bandit capitalism is now the order of the day and the father risks being sacked for getting divorced because his boss is a Christian fundamentalist. Winter is coming and the landscape is bleached, making the film almost monochrome.

The problem is that it's hard to care. The parents are so selfish that you cannot pity their (surely bogus) grief and we don't see enough of the boy before he vanishes to care about him. It felt long and slow.
