How easy is it nowadays to not take the cheapest tender? The Council has had a large reduction in funds from the Government in their great austerity drives. It isn't as if the Government were brilliant at their job either! I wonder how much money was lost by allowing the Waste & Recycling company organise the size and delivery of wheelie bins. A lot of houses with no/very small front gardens should not have have been given them as they are a fire hazard and completely inappropriate. They are far better suited to properties which have larger gardens or back alley access to gardens. Not all boroughs have them. The promise will surely have been of easily reaching recycling targets and of saving money with no or little input from the Council (is there anybody still employed there) yet from what I see going into them much of it isn't recyclable and isn't what is clearly listed on the website. If we can't be bothered to make the effort either then we can't expect much in return. It takes two to tango. Most of the young have smartphones and are very clever at doing lots of things on them - it is a much older generation who are less likely to have them - but just don't see why they should be bothered. They should be bothered. The system needs tightening up and people need to realise that they themselves need to be more discerning about what they buy and think about what they will do with what they are replacing. "Cheap" seldom is cheap in the long run. |
