Just after we moved into Messaline Avenue 19 years ago, the railway bridge at Acton Main Line station was closed for three months of repair work. At that time, all heavy traffic was diverted into Friary Road and onto the A40 where the bridge is stronger. Now access to the A40 is no longer allowed (much to my inconvenience) and officially heavy traffic has to take a long detour. Doubtless, drivers cannot be bothered. No joined up thinking here! I have a friend who lived next to Hammersmith Bridge when an overweight vehicle crossed it one night. She said it was as if a bomb had gone off. (In 1984 the Barnes-side tower bearings failed under a heavy load and had to be replaced. Wikipedia) The bridge was closed for many months for repairs and traffic in the area was chaotic. Do we just wait for the bridge to collapse? As it is over a railway line, the consequences could be awful! |
