I think that my last point ("Should one say that because one cannot define a line between baby and non-baby, all unborns are babies, so that all terminations are murder?") represents Clare's reasoning, but since she hasn't spelled it out, I am not sure. I for one wouldn't agree with that view. There are many situations where you have a continuum between two extremes, where you are fairly sure that one end is "wrong", whereas the other end is "right". Society's response is not usually to determine that all of the continuum is "wrong", but is rather to take the pragmatic step of arbitrarily choosing a tipping point.

One example is underage sex. Almost everyone would agree that it would be wrong for an adult to have sex with an infant. Clearly it is also right for an adult to have sex with a consenting adult. But between these points there are a multitude of combinations. Many would consider it wrong for a 40 year old to have sex with a 14 year old. But what about a 16 year old with a 14 year old, or with a twelve year old?  Like abortion, underage sex also raises scientific and moral/ faith based issues. At what age can one give informed consent? Is it wrong to have sex with someone who is physically sexually mature? When is someone fully sexually mature? When is someone emotionally mature? Is emotional pain an issue? Is it age-dependent? Do these factors differ between the sexes? Society's solution is to impose an "age of consent" which has little to do with consent, but to penalise flexibly. It works, quite well, but many disagree with it, and it sometimes seems absurd.
