Thank you for your thoughts. Firstly, I would like to underline that I was really responding to the question of why there may seemed to be more enthusiasm for tackling the JW controversy than the Islam one.
I didn't have you in mind, in fact, I didn't have any contributors here in mind at all. Please don't think I was making any assumptions about peoples motives for asking questions here, I really wasn't. It doesn't surprise me at all that you were pro war in Iraq. I realise that people can't be summed up on the basis of a couple of comments. I really do try not to put people in boxes, and I'm always surprised when it happens to me.

I have no problem whatsoever with Dave being taken to task. He has put himself out there and in so doing is presumably willing to take his share of brickbats. Ditto the men on the Islam stall at the Oaks. I felt that since they were offering to explain Islam then they ought to be willing to answer sincere questions.
The point I was making was that the enthusiasm for taking a pop at Daves theology was not matched by an enthusuasm for taking a pop at Islam. I was offering some of my own musings in that regard. I'm not so arrogant as to imagine that my musings are themselves divine truths. I'm happy for you to disagree with them. I just want to clarify what I actually meant so that you don't misunderstand me.

With regards to your point about the Sudan, I can't agree at all. I'm pretty well aquainted with AI. I was a member for over ten years until recently. I had a regular standing order and bought all my christmas cards off them for years. They were my sole, longstanding charity interest. I no longer support them because of a conscientious objection I had to certain of their activities, but I recognise that they do a tremendous amount of good.

However, the national interest and activism when it came to Sudan, cannot be measured by AI's activities. The whole country doesn't subscribe to AI.
My point was that there were lots of stop the war in Iraq marches, and the national ( ie non AI subscribing)concern and anxiety about that was NOT matched by the concern about the Sudanese. I can't agree with your feeling that the national concern over the war was matched by concern for Darfur, but that is simply my opinion based on my observation  at the time.

Well, firstly, I would say that is naturally true of SOME, but not all, or even many. That is why advertising is such an incredibly lucrative business.

In anycase, putting myself in the category of those who form opinions based on their own judgement ( natch, LOL!) *I* have formed the opinion that many more imagine themselves to be free thinkers than actually are. Many people ( not all) who dismiss religion and congratulate themselves for being 'free thinkers' have never really understood what religious faith is. I would say that the most brilliant and 'free' thinkers I have ever known ( both IRL or historically) have been people of faith.
My own observation is that faith, properly understood, is more mind expanding than mind limiting. But that's just me.
