I think that there is a general reluctance to take on 'non eurocentric' religions because there is a confusion with the issue of racism.
Also, I think many people are terrifically insecure about their class and education and tend to look to those who they percieve as their 'betters' for cues as to how to speak and behave.
Whilst we are no longer looking up to Lord and Lady Cholmondely-Farquharson and worrying about whether we should say pudding or desert, or lavatory or loo, we still have a ruling elite who  exert a considerable grip on our psyche and behaviour etc.
This progressive elite show us how to speak and think and we mimic them.

So, we 'know' what is bad because they tell us ( homophobia, racism, sexism and so on)
We 'know' that American is a byword for crass ignorance and GW Bush was the Dumbkopf in Chief. We 'know' that his succesor (Dr Utopia) is cool and brainy and all the things Bush wasn't and he will usher in a new era of hope, change and racial harmony. And general good stuff.
Likewise, we 'know' that the pope is "condeming millions of africans to death" when he said in the Cameroon that condoms can make the problem of AIDS worse. Duh! The Pope is such a dummy! How do we know? The progessive elite and their 'organ' the MSM tell us.

Words like 'respect' and 'tolerance' are the special passwords that mark you as a right thinking person.
Some years ago the in words would have been perhaps ( I'm guessing) words that are less vogueish now like 'duty' and 'sacrifice'.

It's kind of ironic, I think, when I hear people talk fairly loftily of how they have "moved on" from being told what to think by churches and institutional religion when they have merely exchanged one means of being seen as righteous for another.
I see a kind of historical elitism and snobbishness in this. We think we have everything to teach our ancestors, and nothing to learn from them.

I suppose I think that the general reluctance to tackle Islam, but the cheerful laying into Dave for his JW beliefs is partly because of this general sense that looking down our nose at certain things makes us look like intelligent and sophisticated free thinkers, but taking the same approach to others means that we run the risk of being denounced for some pc transgression.
In order to play the game, you need to be totally au fait with the passwords that let you in.
One misplaced word and your entire point of view will be dismissed as that of a bigot.

I hope it goes without saying that I am as far from the BNP as I am from Al Quaeda, but when I see the world and his dog falling over themselves to be "appalled" and "disgusted" by the BNP I realise there is another driver at work.
Ditto back when people ( and some of my mates) were deriving a warm glow of self righteousness from going on 'Stop The War' marches. Unlike the warmongers they 'knew' that Iraqis were people too. Nothing wrong with that.
But I had to ask myself where were the millions turning out for a 'Stop The Genocide in Sudan' march?

Nope. Not independant free thinkers. Not by a long stretch.
