| Dave You are right that blood transfusions are not without risk to the recipient. However, it is innacurate to suggest that alternatives like plasma expanders would be an adequate alternative. Loss of circulating volume is one issue that can be alleviated by plasma expanders, but deficiencies of the clotting mechanism won't be reversed by hartmanns solution or saline or whatever alternative you mention. And clotting abnormalities are often the critical 'life or death' factor. The JW interpretation of the scriptures that you mentioned earlier ( Acts etc) is not one that is shared by mainstream Christian churches. Nor did the first Christians take that meaning from it. Understanding the meaning of scripture is not as straightforward as simple 'proof texting' suggests. We have to ask ourselves what meaning the writer intended to convey. If I wrote in my journal that it was raining cats and dogs today ( it was) the meaning that I intend to convey is that it was raining very hard. That would be the literal interpretation of what I said. A literalist interpretation would say that cats and dogs were falling from the sky. This is why it is very important to consider how the first christians understood those verses, since they were most familiar with the idioms of the age. JW theology is, in the span of history, something of a novelty so I have to take JW interpretations with a very large pinch of salt. All that said, I think that if a JW wishes to refuse a blood transfusion then we must respect that. I find it slightly annoying that we find it so easy to jump all over Dave for his faith, but we are much much less forthcoming about the kind of religious practices that really are more threatening to the rest of us. Maybe he is a soft target. It's interesting too that the 'koran bashing' thread has dwindled but this one is still very lively. |
