| The ULEZ will bring a welcome reduction in pollution, but will also mean that some of us may have to replace our cars. This provides an opportunity to do our bit for the environment and save money too! The key is to buy the LIGHTEST, smallest car that is sufficient for our needs. Doing so reduces every type of emission. By contrast, an SUV weighs on average 40% more than a normal car, due to its size and 4-wheel transmission. This excess weight plus poor aerodynamics, is why the International Energy Agency has found that SUVs are the SECOND LARGEST CAUSE of the global rise in carbon dioxide emissions over the past decade. The greater weight also generates more toxic dust from tyre and brake wear. In any case, there is already talk of banning SUVs in cities, so it makes sense to avoid a vehicle that may soon incur extra charges or restrictions. That and climate change are why governments around the world increasingly plan for an electric future. In years to come our children will probably look back on the exhaust-fume smogs of today just as we do now on the coal smogs of the 1950s, and marvel that we didn't act sooner. |
