No it doesn't mean that at all I hope, Maire, but a bit of context might help. Lucy Mangan is a Guardian columnist writer I believe and one suspects the book is another in her series of books and articles to establish her personal brand and reputation as a writer (I have not read any of her books and precious few of her columns as I am not a regular newspaper reader). If she wants to publicise her actions then all and good to her as ultimately it is her own personal choice. It takes nothing way from what she has done though I must admit the cynic in me is automatically suspicious of a book that documents such actions occurring every day for a year presumably? My own personal feeling on the subject is that the people I have met who are consistently doing acts of kindness for others are very circumspect about it and get embarrassed when complimented, largely one suspects because they do it automatically as part of their normal approach to life. |
