I'm sorry Vlod but there have been changes, lots of them and that includes Building Control: https://www.homebuilding.co.uk/advice/private-building-control-vs-local-authority-building-control Some were before Grenfell and some afterwards. Re Grenfell new materials on the market and the rush to insulate were a part of this together with Building Regulations that had not been updated for years and which were not as clear as they could have been, so was workmanship, choice of products and management of the building. The Grenfell tragedy became the catalyst for inspecting and investigating hundreds of buildings which needed not just the cladding to be changed but other remedial building works to make them safe - and they have still not all been rectified. There were even more problems than that. In general I've found no residents of any flats will ever have been told the importance of compartmentation of units or self-closing doors that continue to work well by closing tightly or why you shouldn't just change the front door of your flat to something you just fancy when the one you have has actually been specified as having a certain amount of time of fire resistance - let alone why you should not just drill through floors to put in this or that cable to allow you to use a new TV or some other gadget. Everybody seems to be carrying out makeovers on their older properties nowadays with more thought about what it looks like and how it works for them than whether they are actually compromising any safety aspects. |
