Like Jean, Angela and Sara, I am a Streetwatcher and find this new idea very disconcerting. The previous Council were very supportive of Streetwatchers. When we had our 'conferences' Jason Stacey always turned up - giving up his time to answer our questions and listen to our complaints, along with the other Council officers. At the June 2012 conference, Julian Bell did not bother to turn up - it was left to Bassam Mahfouz. Getting rid of our very helpful and dedicated co-ordinator and hiding us away within the 'neighbourhood governance' umbrella is wrong. We signed up for our volunteer role to help improve the area in which we live. Ironically, the Council want to introduce 'park watchers' - but if they do away with our dedicated e-mail and phone service, things will not get reported thus making a mockery of their supposed desire to keep parks and streets clean. Perhaps the problem is the increased number of complaints by Streetwatchers - not about fly-tipping or graffiti, but about the missed collections and dirty streets caused by the contractors not doing their job properly. I too will write to all concerned, but doubt very much there will be satisfactory answer. They didn't even have the courtesy to let us all know about this possible change - it has only come to my notice third hand! I guess they think the fewer people who know about it the better! |
