Isn't the idea to sack the current - and excellent - co-ordinater and divide all the streetwatchers up into the ghastly "Neighbourhood governance" groups. Which saves a whole one salary while totally emasculating (and possibly politicising) the streetwatchers - who after all are volunteers devoting time and energy to ensuring our environment is kept clean and un-polluted by reporting detritus/graffiti/dumping. Which is of course then supposed to be picked up by the council's contractors. Ay, there's the rub. I suspect the council just don't want to know about dumping etc because it has an inadequate contract with a poor service-provider. If the several hundred streetwatchers across Ealing stopped reporting, the crud would build up, but that's OK because the council wouldn't officially know about it. Quite clever really. |
