Sorry, folks, didn't mean to be alarmist! But after tour on saturday felt more puzzled than before. We saw lovely and impressive areas - King's Rooms main stair, rooms in the Town Hall (now tackily partitioned up for makeshift offices and one with a hideous eruption of damp), terrific decorated ceilings and doorways, great natural light flooding in from huge windows, the amazing curvature of the back wall that can't be seen from outside, the Chimney, which is gorgeous and would be a real eyeful if top was cleaned etc etc. Wish everyone could see them. In the Library some of the old yellowed out plastic light covers had finally been replaced with new clean ones. Small job but what a difference! Upstairs rooms where reference used to be seem a bit wasted. We're told lift is inadequate but I couldn't see any signs of dilapidation. The Priory Community Centre was truly impressive and on leaving I was surrounded by distressed Mums, Dads, kids and other users fearing they are going to lose it. |
