It's a fact of modern life that young people are expected to work for nothing before they get a job. If she had been told she would be paid, then of course she should have been. Or she should have asked. Otherwise not much chance. I have one young friend currently working three days a week for a month for nothing but his fares to Lambeth and there are other young people who have been there for months. No sign of any paid-for work. At the Barbican (surely a respectable place on the face of it) they have three interns at once part-time for three months at a time and pay them nothing at all - thus saving a whole person's salary permanently. And some of the interns have PhDs in Art History. Quite a scam! Not only is it exploitative and immoral (not sure one day is quite in that league) but it means only young people whose parents can afford to keep them get any opportunity at al. Shocking. |
