Maybe cognoscenti will recognise the title as a quote from an Edgar Allen Poe poem. Apparently he was a West Point cadet and this is a sort of exploration of how some (fictitious) events may have led to his obsession with detectives and horror. Set in 1830 and a series of gruesome murders means west poin t calls in a retired detective in the patch. It’s heaving with British actors from Christian Bale and Harry Melling to Gillian Anderson (nearly British), Toby Jones and Timothy Spall. I found it incredibly slow and mannered for the first half. But the second half improved and there is a great twist at the end. The two leads are great but the pacing is far too slow. It felt longer than two hours and eight minutes….
