This is Guillermo del Toro's take on a classic American Film Noir, and a fine one it is too. 1939. Stan burns the body of his father, along with their derelict house and walks away. Soon he falls in with a travelling freak show and they let him stay on to do odd jobs. He lodges with Zeena and her drunken husband Pete who do a mentalist -- mind reading -- act and Stan soon learns the tricks of the trade. There's a rather sweet young woman named Molly who does a show with electricity. She and Stan decide to leave and set up a mentalist act together. Two years later, they're doing very well, making good money working expensive supper clubs. One night they come across Lilith, a psychologist, Cate Blanchett in full Femme Fatale mode. She introduces them to the rich, important and disturbed members of the community who want their services to gain absolution for the awful things that have happened to them and the awful things they have done. Molly is not happy with the new regime and wants to leave but Stan believes they can make their fortune. Stan, previously teetotal, is starting to drink. Sure enough things start to unravel. It's quite a long film but never drags. Visually beautiful too.
