Angouleme, 1963. Anne is a working-class girl at university. She is bright, so bright that her lecturers think she has an academic career ahead of her. But then she finds herself pregnant after losing her virginity to a young man up from Bordeaux for the weekend and it looks as if all her hopes are at an end. Her GP, while sympathetic, has nothing to offer because the penalties for illegal abortion are harsh.  Her best friend Brigitte, who seems to be Commissioner of the Virginity Police, cuts her off and the mean girls make sneering remarks about her being 'loose'. A do-it-yourself attempt at abortion doesn't work and she has to sell almost everything she has to raise 400 francs for the backstreet woman. If she ends up in hospital it's down to chance whether the police are called or a (perhaps more kindly doctor) lists her as a miscarriage. Her work is suffering and it seems likely that she will not pass her exams, let alone do well enough to become a lecturer. A male friend hits on her on the grounds that there's no danger of her getting pregnant. She calls an unwanted pregnancy an illness -- 'One that turns women into housewives'. It's been getting great reviews and I'm not sure why. The problem is that it has nothing new to say: life is grim for women in jurisdictions where abortion is illegal. I learned that from Play For Today about fifty years ago. Some of the scenes are quite graphic and the misery is unrelenting.
