Modern-day Iran. Rahim is in prison for debt, having been sent there by his creditor. Apparently that's a thing in Iran. How Victorian. He is divorced but has a girlfriend whom he hopes to marry on release. When she tells him that she has found a bag containing gold coins, it seems his troubles may be over. On a two-day 'holiday' from prison, he finds that the gold won't cover his debt so announces his find. A woman comes forward to claim it and the TV and newspapers love the story and run with it. Rahim is a hero and his creditor is bullied into saying he will let Rahim leave prison. He's even offered a job by the local council. But then things start to fall apart. Cries of 'didn't happen' are circulating on social media. The HR man at the council wants proof of the story and Rahim can't find the woman whose bag it was (was it even her bag, as she seems to have been at pains to cover her tracks?). So he gets his girlfriend to pretend to be her. This runs at over two hours and has a leisurely pace but kept my attention throughout. It's not clear, even at the end, if Rahim is the sweet, rather hopeless man he seems to be, or a bit of a conman. Certainly he has a temper. As with the Director's two previous films, it's fascinating to see everyday life in Iran with no sign of the deranged clerics that run the theocracy, just ordinary people eking out ordinary lives.
