Even if you assume that nobody has changed their mind since the first vote and that the electorate would be exactly the same (and ignore the fact that more leavers have died and more remainers have become qualified to vote) there is still no mandate to leave the EU regardless. The first vote was a binary choice but it has since become apparent that the real world doesn't work that way. Lots of people who voted leave would prefer to stay in the EU if no deal is the alternative and another section would prefer to stay in the EU if Theresa May's deal was the option. We need a second vote because we need to understand more clearly what the will of the people actually is not because we want to subvert the 'decision' of the first one. |
