I think we should expect the best from people of course, as it fosters trust and what we expect we usually get, in the main.  However, I think one can take that too far and it's inappropriate to expect that everyone is going to be wonderful/trustworthy/sunny/responsible, etc, especially when the evidence is pointing to another scenario.  I think if we go around expecting all to be well when it isn't or reframing a situation by putting a "positive slant" on it when it isn't a positive situation, then it's really denial.  There are drug dealers and drug takers out there right under our nose.  Ditto lovely trustworthy, law-abiding citizens.  It's best be aware that both exist and notice the difference.
