Hi Melinda. You're obviously a great friend and I'm so sorry to hear of the dog owner's troubles in recent times. She really doesn't need this and I'm very sorry she feels she can't go out. On that point, I'm really sure people aren't witch-hunting her or her dog. It would be an awful shame to think that, and I'm sure it's not the case. I'm sorry you've felt the need to post and, if you don't mind my saying, I think it's a little over-reactive. People have been very caring towards both the owner of the dog and the poor cat. I also think it's fair to say that when a dog (or cat) corners its prey (a smaller animal than itself), it will indeed try to kill it. Mostly the smaller animal can get away, thankfully. Poor Jaz couldn't. I'm sure your friend's pet is loving and gentle in the norm. I really don't think the dog was doing anything that didn't come naturally, unfortunately. My step-dad and Dad owned greyhounds and all kinds of dogs....unfortunately to hunt, illegal as it is. In the right environment, they are wonderful pets. When let loose to do what nature urges them to do, they are vicious. Cats, dogs, foxes...all of them. It's in their nature. This doesn't single your friend's dog out at all. I may have made things worse by posting this but that's not my intention. My intention is to squash your friend's anxiety. I don't think anyone is blaming her. I adore all animals, especially dogs but I've also been around them long enough to know they can be vicious when the "need" or chance arises, but we love them just the same. It's shocking when they do and sometimes deadly. I do hope your friend doesn't let this stop her from living her life and I wish her well. |
