But there was no compromise, was there? During the consultation the Council put their plan before us and there were (as Nancy says) many passionate and committed voices raised against it. Like you, I attended all the meetings, the jaunt round London and the games session. The plan after consultation remains essentially the same. I think too that the last concession we demanded is very much in doubt - we asked that no resource should be removed from its site until their new home is ready but the Council want the developers' money up front. If the groups in the Priory are evicted before they have anywhere to go, the loss to the community will be incalculable. In the current climate with examples of closure all over London, if the library is closed for any amount of time, we are likely to lose it for good. You are very trusting of our local authority and whichever private enterprises choose to buy our buildings. Sadly, I'm not. |
