| Always start with the declaration of a conflict of interest: I know the director (Tom Hooper) very slightly and his parents (and dedicatees!)very well indeed. So you may want to take the following with a fist of salt - but it's all true anyhow. This is the best film of the season so far. It tells of how the stammering Bertie, brother to Edward V111, came to the throne and made his seminal broadcast as war was declared. It's a great story, with a fantastic and funny script, beautifully acted and shot. I would have thought Colin Firtha shoo-in for nomination for best actor and possibly a winner. Geoffrey Rush as the Aussie therapist is wonderful - almost equal billing - and Helena Bonham Carter delightful as Queen Elizabeth (best supporting actors all round) What's interesting is the psychology and the pathos and the anger of this naval officer with the enormous speech impediment brought on by an abusive childhood. I loved every minute and so far as I could tell, so did the rest of the audience. General Relaease in early January. |
