| This charts a couple's relationship at two points: when they met and a rocky patch about seven years later. It took a decade to get produced and you can sort of see why...it's a commonplace story of lower middle class American life - not very dramatic or likeable characters. The flashbacks are rather confusing at first because they are not hugely differentiated and the stars aren't starry enough for you to tell immediately who is being who when. It didn't engage me hugely though the rest of the screening audience seemed to enjoy it. the best bit was in the Q & A with Michelle Williams (NOT starry enough to hold one of these on her own and very prone to acressy/ditzy speech) Still she told us about one scene, shot on the Brooklyn Bridge when she has a secret (yes that secret ovvie) and the boy wants her to tell him. She won't and the director instructed him to find it out and her to resist. So Dean (Ryan Gosling) climbs over the rails and fence and looks like he's about to jump - and she tells him. But apparently it was done for real - it WAS on the bridge, there was only one take and the producers rushed over shaking and burbling about helf n safety - whole thing spur of the moment! Loved it as a story and hope it was true. |
