| This latest offering from M Night Shyamalan is at the horror end of his work. An all-American family -- mother, father, 11-year-old daughter Maddox and 6-year-old son Trent -- arrive at a luxurious island resort. All is not rosy, though: she has a tumour in her stomach and the marriage is on the rocks. The manager suggests that they go to a secluded beach where there will be very few other people and they are dropped off the next morning, along with arrogant surgeon Charles, his elderly mother, his trophy wife and their small daughter. Also present are a mixed-race couple where the wife is severely epileptic and a rapper. Trouble starts when the naked body of a young woman is washed up on the beach. Charles decides that the rapper is responsible and he has a scalpel with him. But the slashes he makes heal instantly and the dead body is very soon a pile of bones. People say children grow up fast but the three on the beach are ageing visibly and Trent is soon about 12 and Maddox all grown up. It's clear that the beach accelerates time by a year for every half hour. All attempts to leave it end in failure and soon people are dying, either of old age or in their escape attempts. It's an enjoyable enough watch with the first 80 minutes or so drifting along. It took off for me in the last 20 minutes when we finally found out what was happening and why. At least we did find out! |
